The New Camp was the second camp built in the Valley of Mines. It was constructed in a cavern in the western zone of the Valley of Mines, and it had a good relationship with the Sect Camp but not with the Old Camp.

Camp history

The New Camp is the residence of the Water Mages, Mercenaries and bandits during the existence of the Barrier. Lee and the Water Mages didn't agree to the Fire Mages, who wanted to stay with Gomez and live in luxury at the castle, instead of finding a way to destroy the Barrier. So they assembled an expedition to find another camp, and a way to destroy the Barrier. They found a new mine, that was named Free Mine. They also found a huge cavern, where they build stone huts. They started trading with ore, robbing the Old Camp's caravans and harvesting rice.

They build a tavern, where they sold a special drink made out of rice, called Rice Schnaps. Saturas, the High Mage of Water, had a plan: he had to scrape ore for years, until they had an enough amount to use it for a magical process. He thought that he could reverse the spell of the Barrier, by using the Focus Stones (who were used to create the dome) and a huge ore mound. The scrapers mined ore for years, until they made a large enough ore mound. Saturas used the hero to find the Focus Stones needed. After they were found, a last thing was needed. They had to convince the Fire Mages, because the spell needed twelve mages. After the hero reached the Old Camp, he realized that the mages were all dead, except Milten. Saturas sent the hero to the 13th mage, who led them all at the creation of the Barrier, Xardas, the necromancer. He told the hero that the Water Mages' plan was wrong and that it wouldn't work. He told the hero that, to destroy the Barrier, he needed to banish the Sleeper, a mighty arch demon, the Avatar of Beliar worshiped by Orcs in a huge underground temple, near their citadel.

Because of the collapse of the Old Mine, Gomez sent his guards to take command of the Free Mine. The hero together with Gorn managed to take it back, short after, however. After the hero found Uriziel, the weapon needed to banish the demon, he used a spell with the aid of Milten, and recharged the sword using the Ore Mound. After that, Saturas was beside himself with rage.
After the Barrier was destroyed, the New Camp was overrun by the army of darkness, all was covered in ice, and the cavern became the nest of Finkregh, the ice dragon.

The majority of the inhabitants of the New Camp were bandits and rogues. However, the people who hadn't passed the test of admission were forced to work in the fields or to leave the camp. The mercenaries were a higher rank, and they protected the Water Mages. Inside the camp there were two different areas:

The cave

Most people lived here. Here is where most commercial activities took place.

Rogues, bandits and mercenaries lived in huts made of clay and stone. The huts were superposed in three levels (just as the rows of seats of an amphitheater), and they were fairly solid.

In the left part of the cave lived the rogues, leaded by Lares. They didn't worked at all, but they defended the camp from the attacks of wolves, snappers and the shadows and guards from the Old Camp.

In the right side of the cave lived the mercenaries, protectors of the Water Mages. As the rogues, they were not very interested in working in the fields or in the mines.

There was also a fourth level, in which the Water Mages lived in luxurious buildings.

Finally, in the center of the cave, there was a metal grating on the floor, and beneath it was the magic ore mound, which could be accessed from the teleport room at Saturas'.

The surrounding areas

  • The rice fields. Here is where the peasants got food for the camp. They were ruled by the Rice Lord and his thugs. Working in the fields was a hard task, and the peasants were the poorest men in the camp. The peasants' hut was next to the lake, behind the tavern.
  • The watchtower. It was at the entrance of the New Camp. It was occupied by some mercenaries, whose leader was Jarvis.
  • The dam. It was constructed by Homer, but it was being destroyed because of the constant attacks of a lurker. The dam prevented the rice fields from a flood, and it was the only bridge between the cave and the entrance of the camp.
  • The tavern on the lake. Here is were some rogues had fun and got drunk. The most common drink in the New Camp was rice schnapps. However, only people from the New Camp and swampweed traders were admitted into the tavern.
  • The Free Mine. It was not really a part from the New Camp, but it belonged to the mercenaries and Water Mages. It was ruled by mercenaries, and the magic ore the scrapers dug was taken to the ore mound.

Hierarchy

  • Peasants - they worked in the rice fields and earned very little money. However, they were essential for the New Camp. Some of them are Horatio, Pock and Rufus.
  • Scrapers - they dug for ore for the Water Mages. They earned a little more money than the diggers from the Old Camp, but they were still very poor. The most qualified scraper was Swiney, at the Free Mine.
