Grimes is an old digger, with a large amount of experience, working in the mines for over a decade. He states that he entered the Barrier more or less voluntarily.

During the existence of the Barrier, he worked in two different mines. First he was a digger in the Abandoned Mine, being one of the few people to survive the collapse of the mine.

After the mine caved-in, he moved on to the, at that time, newly settled Old Mine. He labored in this mine until it also caved-in.

After the Fall of the Barrier, he was the only person not struggling to escape of the Colony. Instead would choose to remain behind, and would restart working as a digger, once the Paladins would establish in the Valley of Mines.
