Gerbrandt is a wealthy merchant living in the Upper District of Khorinis. He is an influential man in the city, and a lot of the people in the harbor district are working for him or businesses he own. He is an arrogant man, condescending to anyone who doesn't possess money and is also corrupt - most of the fortune he amassed was procured through illegal means.

In the past, he had a helper for those shady deals, a thief called Diego. When he realized that his associate knew too much about his business and that he didn't need him anymore, he framed him and caused him to be sentenced for imprisonment within the Penal Colony and took over his house and business Diego established in the meantime.

Five years later, after the Barrier around the Penal Colony was destroyed, Diego returns to Khorinis, and he gives a letter to the hero, who delivers it to Gerbrandt. When Gerbrandt finds out that Diego is back, he runs to the harbor to hide and leaves the house and the bus sines to the right owner, Diego.
